Big and communal enough to have a good opportunity to meet cool fellow travelers, while small enough to ensure things don’t get too crazy; the new Explora, comfortably right in the middle of the traveler’s centre of La Candelaria, is quickly building up an enviable reputation amongst the bevy of hostels around the area. The dorms and private rooms are fairly standard in shape, size and price; with one important stand-out feature: they’re clean. Add to that the best hot showers you’re likely to come across outside of a blue movie, and you’re going to be fairly happy. Free coffee all day, cheap breakfast, friendly staff, and a cocktail bar only add to the likelihood of happiness.

Gilesy says: Maybe this will expose my slightly bibidinous tendencies, but the little bar at Explora is a winner. The showers are also slowly passing into the stuff of legend, and the staff are awesome. It’s two doors up from the birthplace of poet, Jose Asuncion Silva, who had an amazing beard, among other things.
